Parent Teachers Association

Ohoka School prides itself on its high degree of parental and community involvement.  We welcome and encourage all parents to become involved in the school and their child’s/children’s education.  There are many ways parents can help out, whether it is on our Parent Teacher Association, our Board of Trustees, with our sports programme, within the academic programme, with extra curricular activities or just down at the school assisting teachers in the classroom.  We run many out of classroom events and excursions and value parental support greatly.

If you would like to become involved, see our current programmes offered on the Homepage and come on down and introduce yourself.

The PTA is one of the cornerstones of the school community. It meets monthly, usually on a Wednesday evening, at the school. It is made up of two representatives for each classroom/year plus an executive committee and a teacher representative.  Everyone is welcome to attend these meetings, and minutes of the meetings are available to the public as well.  The AGM is held every year in March, and committee members are elected at this time.

The aims of the PTA are:

·   to foster cooperation and understanding between home and school

·   to bring parents, families and staff together for social activities, demonstrations and guest speakers, and

·   to help raise funds to provide facilities and opportunities for the benefit of the Ohoka School children.

Some of the social events regularly arranged by the PTA include a family picnic at the beginning of the year, an occasional themed dance for the community, a fun filled night of Ram’s basketball, a disco for the children at the end of the year, and regular guest speakers, often arranged by the Community Support Group, as well as parent/toddler afternoon teas and Friday drinks for new families who arrive during the year.  All of the school community is welcome to any of these events, and events will be advertised in the school’s weekly newsletter.

The Ohoka School PTA is perhaps most well known for its outstanding fundraising ability. The PTA runs at least one fundraising event each year, which includes the North Canterbury Women’s Triathlon, now an award winning event, the Plant Sale, Garden Tour, Art @ Ohoka (the latter three being biannual events) and the yearly Stars in Their Eyes (See links for more information on these events).  These events have raised over $80,000 in the past few years alone, and have contributed to the fantastic ILC (library) at the school as well as many other projects.  The PTA’s aim is to have a few very good fundraisers which move outside the school community, make a large financial impact, and therefore make a real difference to the school.  Come and join us!
